May 29 to be held as Everest Day

May 29 to be held as Everest Day

The government has decided to celebrate May 29 as “International Everest Day” in order to commemorate the historic first ascent of the world’s highest summit by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.
The government, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the private sector would jointly celebrate the day. This occasion would provide an opportunity to promote adventure tourism.
Prachanda Man Shrestha, chief executive officer of NTB stated that various events such as the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, a wall climbing competition, painting competition, a quiz contest on mountaineering and a grand musical show would be organized on the marked day.
Speaking on the occasion, Amelia Rose Hillary, Edmund Hillary’s grand-daughter, said that the day would be equally important for the Hillary family, Nepalese people and the mountaineers the world over.
